The sunny interior and natural exterior are finished with durable, low-VOC materials.  It’s located on a rural site, in a neighborhood surrounded by shared conservation land.  Perfect for those desiring integrated energy savings and durability for sustainable, economical living.

LMI Residence

posted May 14, 2009 10:51 AM by Tom Good   [ updated May 14, 2009 11:03 AM ]

DESIGNER OR BUILDER (with contact info):  Architect: James Burde - Teiki-Techture, Jericho, VT   www.teiki.com (802) 899-2497.  Builder:  William Fitzpatrick - Shelter Construction, East Montpelier, VT (802) 454-1485.

DESCRIPTION:
Designed as a Pilot Home and certified by Vermont Builds Greener, as part of establishing the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED for Homes model, the LMI Residence offers everything desirable in a small, energy efficient, environmentally friendly home located on a classic site in the heart of Vermont.  The design draws upon a "Big House, Little House, Back House" vernacular of New England, but adds a twist. In order to take advantage of both the solar orientation and a view to the north-east, there is a 30 degree sweep between the Big and the Little House.  The plan provides an open and comfortable living space around a central wood stove, obligatory Vermont mudroom entryway, kitchen/dining area, study, and bath on the ground floor; on the second floor there are three bedrooms and a full bath: all within a total area of 1500 square feet.  Some notable efficient construction techniques include a slab-on-grade foundation, balloon framing, and "optimum value engineering."  Locally sourced materials were used for both framing and finish work.

RATINGS: Vermont Builds Greener certified in 2005 earning 196 Scorecard points; U.S. EPA/DOE ENERGY STAR Home certified by Vermont ENERGY STAR Homes a service of Efficiency Vermont as a 5 Star + home with a Home Energy Index Rating score of 55 points (homes must score 80 points or less to qualify as ENERGY STAR Homes), & certified in compliance with the VT Residential Building Energy Standards.

DESCRIPTION: The Daniel Chipman model home was designed by architect Sandra Vitzthum of Montpelier and built by ReArch Company of South Burlington as a tribute to Vermont’s architectural past while striving towards a more sustainable future. The South Ridge Community in Middlebury – of which the Chipman is a part – has adopted a philosophical commitment to preserving the area’s rich aesthetic history as well as the environment. In this vein the home was created as an architectural reinterpretation of a classic Vermont farmhouse using some of the most up to date green building materials and techniques. In keeping with Vermont tradition ReArch Company utilized as many local products as possible in the construction and design, from Vermont slate, to the sustainably harvested cherry floors, to the Hubbardton Forge produced light fixtures and dining room chandelier. The result is a residence of timeless elegance.

VanSicklen Farmhouse

PROJECT NAME:  VanSicklen Farmhouse

DESCRIPTION: This custom modular, LEED and ENERGY STAR, 5 Star+ home was designed for a couple who lost their 200-year old farmhouse to fire.  The site was tight and challenging, with ledge and wetland designations on both sides.  There was only one place to rebuild the house and solar access was limited.  But, on the bright side, we discovered great water and were able to harness geothermal for the HVAC.   Many beams and some decking was salvaged from the burn site and reused in the new design, belying the home's factory-built origins.
The house features include: ° Geothermal HVAC ° Programmable Heat Recovery Ventilation ° ICF foundation ° Super insulated envelope using dens-pack cellulose and small amounts of green urethane. ° Modular construction and delivery using non-toxic, certified or local materials ° Pella's best, Architecture Series, windows ° Fluorescent lamps and Energy Star appliances throughout ° Recycled 200-year old beams ° Certified or local materials ° Non-toxic and VOC-free paints, sealants and finishes ° Advanced air filtration (merv 12+) ° Minimum construction waste
